When Anamorphosis Meets Street Art

Street artists have always been pioneers of pushing boundaries between art and interaction. Street art is essentially about using space that is already there are and redefining it and recreating that space; whether the purpose or art has simply an aesthetic significance or seeks to challenge societal standards and views. Or perhaps the artist is taking their art to the furthest place possible and then taking it back to the streets where it came from. There are as many artists as there are motives. But one thing is certain, whatever the medium or resolution, street art has always been about creating a moving interaction between the work itself and the ones who view it.

I was recently fascinated by 5 up and coming artists, Edgar Mueller, Julian Beever, Manfred Stader, Kurt Wenner, and Eduardo Relero, who use the mediums of chalk and paint to create 3 dimensional images and even advertisements that push the minds of those who are fortunate enough to witness their art into blurring the lines between what they see that is physically there and what their mind is being lead or tricked to see. The finished piece is created by using the process of anamorphosis that allows for a three dimensional illusion to be created when viewed at the correct angle.

Anamorphosis is the process of distorting projection or perspective in such a way that it becomes visible only when viewed in a particular way or angle. By encompassing this process these talented artists have created images that not only force the viewers into altering the state of their everyday perception, but allows for a complete integration of art with the viewer. Many of the works are created in such a way that it allows for complete involvement and interaction of the audience. These five emerging artists have so gained attention that many advertising companies have found the genius in their works of art. Several artists have been called upon to create multi-faceted ads that allow for this same type of canvas-to-person interaction, thereby increasing the chance of acknowledging the product.

It is evident then that the world of street art which once was considered to be destructive to public properties and also was filled with society placed social stigma has become one of edgiest forms of art out there. The five artists whose art was mentioned will continue to push for street art to be available in many forms to the public eye.
